Advent: Making A Bed

Advent: Making A Bed

I am really excited to bring Advent into our family traditions this year.  Until recently it hasn't meant more than a chocolate a day calendar.  This year we will be building on anticipation as a family in a couple of different ways.  One, I mentioned previously, will be gathering with two other families once a week.  The one I want to share in this post is what we will be doing just with our family.
We are preparing a bed for the Christ child.  Today we made a manger out of an old doll box.  To make the experience more personal we each drew/wrote on newsprint things that we thought a baby would enjoy or about the baby.  Then we covered the feedbox/manger with our papers.  Some of the images were crowns, crosses, diaper pin, and stars.  On mine I wrote the word 'mama' over and over and on my 5 year olds she drew His Mother.  We both were thinking of what a newborn needs most.
Next week we will fill the manger with straw.  The following week swaddling cloths.  The final week the girls will look and find a doll in the manger.
Here is the doll I chose.  It was important to me that one, he be an anatomically correct boy doll, and that he not be fair skinned and blue eyed.

  1. In full agreement on the skin, eyes and anatomy. My mom-friends are horrified when I do stuff like that though :)
