Last post I was preparing to share Godly Play on Ash Wednesday. Because I was sharing at a non liturgical church I added two lessons, Creation and The Holy Family, to the Mystery of Easter. I would say it was a successful session. The only drawbacks were the children not being familiar with a new rhythm and a few extra adult interruptions (right in the middle of stories). All that to say, it went better than I had hoped. I am looking forward to returning for Good Friday. I plan to do all six Faces of Easter that evening!
Today we began a Saturday morning session that will last through March. We have our four girls and a few other children joining us. I am super excited because we have a small group of refugee children from Burma. They are older than I had first thought, middle and high school, but was I pleased they could be a part regardless.
We did the Faces of Easter 1and 2 this morning. This was my first time using this material and I was extremely impressed with the wondering time which allows the children to help tell the story with items they see in the classroom.
We set up and take down each Saturday morning. We have two shelves in the classroom that we clear of toys and set up the stories and art materials. Here is a picture of our shelves. You can see we are purchasing and making material as we need them so the New Testament shelves are bare. But not for long! I was tempted to spread out the materials so we wouldn't have empty space. Then I thought of the much used phrase, "watch where I go and get this work so you will know just where to find it". I decided empty space was better than constantly shifting everything.
I cheer your decision to leave the empty space and be consistent about where materials are stored. It will also help children spot new materials. I have one little girl who loves it when she notices something new.
