Continent shelves.
We started Asia today and considering we spent 3 months on North America, I anticipate no less than 6 weeks on Asia. The items on the shelves will be rotated as necessary.
At present we have:
- Calligraphy set with two step by step books, one for brush painted animals the other Chinese characters. (my husband is a calligrapher and we have had these for years. I think we bought them in Vancouver B.C.'s Chinatown district.)
- Postcards of various places throughout Asia
- A box of Asian animal figures and corresponding book. (Target $1 bins)
- Geo Puzzle Asia (more to follow on this)
- Cards of Asian flags (Target $1 bin)
- Bamboo starts (Ikea) Each girl has one she put in a vase. Today we took measurements and will each week to calculate growth. (Grace also created a Japanese Garden landscape incorporating the animals and rocks from the shelves.)
Now about that puzzle... I was super excited to purchase this puzzle because the description states the pieces are made in the shape of Asia's countries. I was quite disappointed to open the box and see it was not as I expected. China, for example, is divided into about 4 pieces. The smaller countries are combined and the ocean is often also part of the piece (country). Upon realizing it fell quite short of the Montessori maps the girls are used to working with, I went online and am excited for our new Montessori Asia map to arrive. I just hate it when I try to save a few dollars only to then have to spend even more.
We had fun today making tiny flags for labeling.
Can you expound upon what you do once the shelf is set up? For example, the little flags for labeling the puzzle.
ReplyDeleteIt looks very cool!
Yes! I try to put out items which lend themselves to being open ended. This leaves room for creativity-mine and theirs- to dictate different ways we use the materials. I just realized the one "art" material is the calligraphy and it is the least versatile- Because it is a specific tool. I will be posting on the many ways we use each item.
